00:00:42:13 - 00:00:46:23
Welcome to another episode of the Style
and Strategy podcast.
00:00:46:23 - 00:00:53:05
So today is a little bit more around the
strategy piece and specifically let's chat
00:00:53:05 - 00:00:55:16
around your personal brand.
00:00:55:23 - 00:01:01:02
So if you've listened to the podcast for a
little while, you know that I'm really
00:01:01:02 - 00:01:07:08
passionate about personal brand and I
still get the question today around, so
00:01:07:08 - 00:01:10:02
you only work with entrepreneurs.
00:01:10:02 - 00:01:13:00
and or small business owners, et cetera.
00:01:13:00 - 00:01:13:08
And the question, I guess the answer to
that is no.
00:01:13:08 - 00:01:16:02
And the question, I guess the answer to
that is no.
00:01:16:02 - 00:01:22:15
And the reason why I really wanted to chat
around it today is because it comes back
00:01:22:15 - 00:01:28:10
to everyone in this day and age has a
personal brand.
00:01:28:10 - 00:01:33:08
And yet we probably don't think about it
quite like that.
00:01:33:08 - 00:01:39:14
And it's really the terminology that can
throw us off a little bit.
00:01:39:16 - 00:01:46:05
So if I had to ask you the question and if
you had to ponder for a little bit and
00:01:46:05 - 00:01:53:07
think about what are your brand values as
an individual?
00:01:53:16 - 00:02:00:03
And for those of you that are, you know,
working your way up the career ladder or
00:02:00:03 - 00:02:02:22
in a very stable career, et cetera, I
would want you to have, spend a little bit
00:02:02:22 - 00:02:05:06
in a very stable career, et cetera, I
would want you to have, spend a little bit
00:02:05:06 - 00:02:06:08
of time, right?
00:02:06:08 - 00:02:09:11
And have a real think about.
00:02:09:14 - 00:02:15:13
What are your brand values and what does
that actually mean?
00:02:15:13 - 00:02:16:11
So let's take a step back here.
00:02:16:11 - 00:02:18:15
So let's take a step back here.
00:02:18:15 - 00:02:21:13
So what is a brand value?
00:02:21:13 - 00:02:23:09
What does that even mean?
00:02:23:09 - 00:02:29:12
And the way I want you to start to think
about this is twofold.
00:02:29:12 - 00:02:33:15
So I want you to break it up to think
about what is it that you really love?
00:02:33:15 - 00:02:37:05
So I want you to break it up to think
about what is it that you really love?
00:02:37:05 - 00:02:42:16
about the work that you do as a starting
point.
00:02:42:16 - 00:02:48:17
So, you know, someone might say, I really
love the achievement that I get when I
00:02:48:17 - 00:02:51:03
deliver something and, you know, I extend
that out and I get feedback on that.
00:02:51:03 - 00:02:54:05
deliver something and, you know, I extend
that out and I get feedback on that.
00:02:54:05 - 00:02:57:03
It might be that you've got this level of
independence in the way that you deliver
00:02:57:03 - 00:03:00:15
It might be that you've got this level of
independence in the way that you deliver
00:03:00:15 - 00:03:01:13
things.
00:03:01:13 - 00:03:06:20
Or it could be that you've got a level of
responsibility that is really important to
00:03:06:20 - 00:03:07:19
you.
00:03:07:22 - 00:03:11:02
So that's just kind of to name a few.
00:03:11:02 - 00:03:17:00
So I want you to think about, well, why do
you love what you do?
00:03:17:16 - 00:03:20:03
And maybe write it on a scale to one to
five to make it a little bit easier and
00:03:20:03 - 00:03:23:04
And maybe write it on a scale to one to
five to make it a little bit easier and
00:03:23:04 - 00:03:28:15
sort of say, well, between zero to five,
based on these values, how important are
00:03:28:15 - 00:03:30:10
they to me?
00:03:31:02 - 00:03:34:19
Then I want you to start to think about
what type of activities do you enjoy?
00:03:34:19 - 00:03:38:07
Then I want you to start to think about
what type of activities do you enjoy?
00:03:38:07 - 00:03:44:23
And when you think about activities, I'm
not talking about necessarily, I like
00:03:44:23 - 00:03:48:05
abseiling or rock climbing or things like
that.
00:03:48:05 - 00:03:52:13
It's much more around the activities you
do relating to your work or tasks or
00:03:52:13 - 00:03:53:11
It's much more around the activities you
do relating to your work or tasks or
00:03:53:11 - 00:03:55:02
It's much more around the activities you
do relating to your work or tasks or
00:03:55:02 - 00:03:55:19
things like that.
00:03:55:19 - 00:04:03:18
So for example, in a work context, it
could be you love decision making, you
00:04:03:18 - 00:04:05:02
love abstract kind of tasks, you love
public contact, you might love risk taking
00:04:05:02 - 00:04:08:00
love abstract kind of tasks, you love
public contact, you might love risk taking
00:04:08:00 - 00:04:09:21
love abstract kind of tasks, you love
public contact, you might love risk taking
00:04:09:21 - 00:04:14:03
or working more on the strategic side of
things.
00:04:14:03 - 00:04:18:20
I think that starts to give you then a
little bit of picture or color around.
00:04:18:20 - 00:04:19:23
So what are some of those, what do you
love to do your intrinsic values?
00:04:19:23 - 00:04:20:10
So what are some of those, what do you
love to do your intrinsic values?
00:04:20:10 - 00:04:23:04
So what are some of those, what do you
love to do your intrinsic values?
00:04:23:05 - 00:04:28:12
versus what do you love to do at work that
really ticks those boxes.
00:04:28:12 - 00:04:29:11
And then I want you to think about things
like what is really important to you.
00:04:29:11 - 00:04:34:21
And then I want you to think about things
like what is really important to you.
00:04:34:21 - 00:04:35:08
And then I want you to think about things
like what is really important to you.
00:04:35:08 - 00:04:39:22
And you're gonna be ranking these one to
five again, very much like your
00:04:39:22 - 00:04:40:11
And you're gonna be ranking these one to
five again, very much like your
00:04:40:11 - 00:04:41:11
environment.
00:04:41:11 - 00:04:44:04
So it's gotta be autonomous.
00:04:44:04 - 00:04:48:02
It might be, it's got to be a really nice
environment to work in.
00:04:48:02 - 00:04:51:03
You know, maybe you're working from home
and you have to pop into the office a few
00:04:51:03 - 00:04:52:03
days a week.
00:04:52:03 - 00:04:55:17
You know, maybe it's, you know, it's got
to pay well, whether that's your business
00:04:55:17 - 00:04:58:21
or whether that's you kind of personally.
00:04:58:22 - 00:05:04:04
And then I want you to think about your
relationship bucket as well.
00:05:04:04 - 00:05:09:02
So what sort of interactions are really
important to you from a relationship side
00:05:09:02 - 00:05:09:23
of things?
00:05:09:23 - 00:05:12:08
Is it loyalty, humor?
00:05:12:13 - 00:05:13:15
seriousness, competitive, you know, what,
what are some of those areas around that?
00:05:13:15 - 00:05:18:20
seriousness, competitive, you know, what,
what are some of those areas around that?
00:05:18:20 - 00:05:24:00
And then, you know, I want you to think
about, well, what attribute of work or the
00:05:24:00 - 00:05:33:01
things that you do is again, really adds
to your day to day as well.
00:05:33:01 - 00:05:33:17
And what really connects you to a bigger
meaning?
00:05:33:17 - 00:05:38:09
And what really connects you to a bigger
meaning?
00:05:38:09 - 00:05:47:03
And so by going through these types of
questions, you start to identify what your
00:05:47:03 - 00:05:52:23
brand, as in your personal brand, values
are and what is important to you.
00:05:52:23 - 00:05:57:01
You might have previously gone through
exercises like strength funders and things
00:05:57:01 - 00:06:01:18
like that to help flesh that out a little
bit more, but this is a really simple way
00:06:01:18 - 00:06:03:13
to do that.
00:06:03:15 - 00:06:08:19
So then your next question is likely going
to be, well, I've got these brand values
00:06:08:19 - 00:06:13:02
that I've come up with and what's the so
what around that?
00:06:13:02 - 00:06:15:04
that I've come up with and what's the so
what around that?
00:06:15:15 - 00:06:22:01
And why it's important for you to identify
that is because we don't often spend a lot
00:06:22:01 - 00:06:29:11
of time thinking about these and then
thinking about where we are in our current
00:06:29:11 - 00:06:30:09
role and where we wanna kind of get.
00:06:30:09 - 00:06:32:00
role and where we wanna kind of get.
00:06:32:00 - 00:06:32:18
too.
00:06:32:18 - 00:06:38:14
Because when you can sit down and go,
well, this is what I really want, you're
00:06:38:14 - 00:06:44:02
then easily able to marry back to where
you are today.
00:06:44:02 - 00:06:51:21
And seeing if there is a gap, or if
there's a potential need for some change.
00:06:51:21 - 00:06:56:00
Or, you know, like a change in direction,
really.
00:06:56:06 - 00:07:00:08
Now, this again, starts to
00:07:00:13 - 00:07:07:07
show insights around your style.
00:07:07:10 - 00:07:10:02
And I know you're probably thinking, what?
00:07:10:02 - 00:07:13:05
How is that even possible?
00:07:13:07 - 00:07:19:20
Well, from those brand values, some key
attributes will start to come out.
00:07:19:20 - 00:07:24:23
And some of those you will innately know,
you might be much more outgoing and you
00:07:24:23 - 00:07:28:07
prefer that outgoing environment where
00:07:28:07 - 00:07:35:23
that might actually link to you really
enjoying outfits that have a little bit
00:07:35:23 - 00:07:39:09
more punch to them, a little bit more
statement to them.
00:07:39:09 - 00:07:48:05
And actually when you are put into an
environment where you can't express that
00:07:48:05 - 00:07:51:07
side of you, the lights go out.
00:07:51:07 - 00:07:56:15
You're put into a suit, a navy suit, which
might be beautiful,
00:07:56:17 - 00:08:03:03
But again, those lights go out and that
real spark of who you innately are is
00:08:03:03 - 00:08:04:00
But again, those lights go out and that
real spark of who you innately are is
00:08:04:00 - 00:08:06:11
toned down a level.
00:08:06:11 - 00:08:09:03
So you know that I talk about this theory
that I've got as part of my framework,
00:08:09:03 - 00:08:11:14
So you know that I talk about this theory
that I've got as part of my framework,
00:08:11:14 - 00:08:14:05
which is this ladder of elevation.
00:08:14:12 - 00:08:16:19
Well, the same applies for where you
don't, if you don't have a clear picture
00:08:16:19 - 00:08:18:21
Well, the same applies for where you
don't, if you don't have a clear picture
00:08:18:21 - 00:08:19:19
of what.
00:08:19:19 - 00:08:25:15
your brand is, your values and how that
comes to light and what that is on the
00:08:25:15 - 00:08:32:19
inside, what really lights you up and then
how that plays on the outside with the
00:08:32:19 - 00:08:35:18
clothes that you actually put on.
00:08:35:18 - 00:08:42:10
And it suddenly becomes these two spheres
of better understanding.
00:08:42:10 - 00:08:49:10
Well, if I enjoy these certain things, if
I then go and pick something that
00:08:49:10 - 00:08:58:19
doesn't allow the values that are
important to me to shine, then I'm never
00:08:58:19 - 00:09:04:02
going to really perform at my best.
00:09:04:21 - 00:09:12:19
And so if you start to think about that,
what I love to see clients when they start
00:09:12:19 - 00:09:19:07
to consider it is they start to see in
their wardrobe that, hold on.
00:09:19:23 - 00:09:26:19
This is why I no longer feel like the
pieces in my wardrobe suit who I am today,
00:09:26:19 - 00:09:32:02
because they have evolved in their style
and who they are.
00:09:32:02 - 00:09:37:09
Many times, you know, I have clients
saying, but I know my style, I did that
00:09:37:09 - 00:09:44:20
maybe five, 10 years ago, but they haven't
revisited that in a much broader context.
00:09:45:10 - 00:09:46:08
And...
00:09:46:08 - 00:09:53:05
It's not until they do that that
realization starts to set to say, hang on,
00:09:53:18 - 00:09:55:05
now I get it.
00:09:55:05 - 00:09:56:11
Now I get why those pieces, even though
they're really nice and they were, even
00:09:56:11 - 00:09:57:00
Now I get why those pieces, even though
they're really nice and they were, even
00:09:57:00 - 00:10:03:15
though those pieces were really nice and
they still look brand new, don't work for
00:10:03:15 - 00:10:10:00
me any longer because I'm not that person
and my values and a whole lot of...
00:10:10:00 - 00:10:11:05
attributes associated with that have now
shifted.
00:10:11:05 - 00:10:13:11
attributes associated with that have now
shifted.
00:10:14:10 - 00:10:19:20
So when you're thinking about your
personal brand, obviously that values
00:10:19:20 - 00:10:21:06
component is one.
00:10:21:06 - 00:10:26:05
The second one being your style around
that and how those two really marry
00:10:26:05 - 00:10:27:11
together.
00:10:27:11 - 00:10:34:10
But then you're also starting to think
through, well, where am I at?
00:10:34:10 - 00:10:37:03
And from a career perspective,
00:10:37:07 - 00:10:39:12
does it actually tick those boxes?
00:10:39:12 - 00:10:41:23
And I touched on that slightly before.
00:10:41:23 - 00:10:47:20
Now, where it doesn't, it gives you a real
opportunity to sit down and start to work
00:10:47:20 - 00:10:48:16
through.
00:10:48:16 - 00:10:52:10
Well, if I align these two pieces, I'm
going to feel better.
00:10:52:10 - 00:10:58:02
And I'm going to be representing to the
world who I am today, or who I want to be
00:10:58:02 - 00:10:59:00
in the future.
00:10:59:00 - 00:11:05:10
But then what steps do I now need to take
in order to feel that?
00:11:05:10 - 00:11:10:07
confidence that I'm now heading in that
right direction around my career and how
00:11:10:07 - 00:11:10:16
confidence that I'm now heading in that
right direction around my career and how
00:11:10:16 - 00:11:13:05
am I putting that out there?
00:11:13:05 - 00:11:18:23
And for some, that might be I need to
maybe network more and start to
00:11:18:23 - 00:11:19:17
And for some, that might be I need to
maybe network more and start to
00:11:19:17 - 00:11:21:17
investigate other opportunities.
00:11:21:17 - 00:11:30:16
For others, it might be I actually need to
vocalize a little bit more where I want to
00:11:30:16 - 00:11:33:03
go and what direction.
00:11:33:03 - 00:11:37:09
I want to head in, which you may not have
in the past.
00:11:37:09 - 00:11:43:08
And so you might be thinking again, well,
hold on, if I'm doing that, what has that
00:11:43:08 - 00:11:48:09
got to do with the brand and the style?
00:11:48:11 - 00:11:54:06
And that fundamentally has everything to
do with that because once you feel like
00:11:54:06 - 00:12:01:10
you're congruent and aligned in those two
pieces to go have those conversations.
00:12:01:10 - 00:12:03:08
to go to that networking event and
actually present as who you are and be
00:12:03:08 - 00:12:03:13
to go to that networking event and
actually present as who you are and be
00:12:03:13 - 00:12:09:00
to go to that networking event and
actually present as who you are and be
00:12:09:00 - 00:12:15:15
clear about the direction that you want to
go in becomes so much simpler.
00:12:15:15 - 00:12:15:20
clear about the direction that you want to
go in becomes so much simpler.
00:12:16:00 - 00:12:21:15
So if this is something that really sparks
your interest and you'd like to sit down
00:12:21:15 - 00:12:26:10
and have a look at it in a little bit more
detailed, specifically on the brand side,
00:12:26:10 - 00:12:31:12
I do have a free guide that will take you
through some of those value -based
00:12:31:12 - 00:12:36:03
questions to help you in that journey and
starting to craft that from a brand side
00:12:36:03 - 00:12:38:05
questions to help you in that journey and
starting to craft that from a brand side
00:12:38:05 - 00:12:39:08
of things.
00:12:39:08 - 00:12:39:09
of things.
00:12:39:10 - 00:12:44:22
Alternatively, if you'd prefer to bounce
off and have a little bit of a chat on
00:12:44:22 - 00:12:49:13
maybe how I can help you through that
journey, then please feel free to reach
00:12:49:13 - 00:12:55:12
